Millennial and Gen Z consumers and marketing executives are re-powering the interest in environmentally responsible packaging and practices in the beauty world, prompting Indie brands and others to seek supply chain partners with relatable stories—and deliverable goods. In the April/May issue of Beauty Packaging, we speak to beauty industry analysts, experts, suppliers and brands for a look at what’s trending now—and what we can expect moving forward. Here, we showcase a number of additional brands that match eco-friendly packaging with their social ethics—and “natural” formulas. See the brands described below in this Slideshow: 9 Brands with a Sustainable Mission /skin regimen/, from The Davines Group The Davines Group (/skin regimen/, Davines and [comfort zone]) has always been committed to dramatically reducing the use of petrol-based, virgin plastic and their footprint on the environment and was recognized for their efforts when they became a certified B-Corp in 2017. Created for the urban dweller that lives “a multi-hyphenate lifestyle,” reflected graphically in the logo slashes, /skin regimen/ (from The Davines Group) is clinically proven to reduce the effects of stress and lifestyle aging on both skin and mind. All of the products are manufactured at the company’s headquarters in Parma, Italy, utilizing electricity from renewable resources and fully recyclable components: glass, sugar cane-derived plastic (green PE), safety-certified aluminum and FSC-certified paper. In addition, /skin regimen/ is CO2 neutral, as it adheres to a reforestation program to compensate CO2 emissions. Brian Brazeau, general manager, /skin regimen/, says: “The sleek, minimalistic black design of /skin regimen/ not only reflects the contemporary, genderless, urban attitude of the brand, but also our commitment to beauty and sustainability. We specifically chose dark stained glass and aluminum packaging in order to block the full spectrum of damaging, visible light, and guarantee optimal protection of our active ingredients to prolong the formulas’ potency and efficacy.” Meow Meow Tweet Meow Meow Tweet uses recyclable and biodegradable packaging, and the brand is making an effort to bring a zero-waste approach to beauty routines with products like their natural deodorant sticks, vegan lip balms, and a nourishing shampoo bar. The brand’s fun and vibrant paper packaging is “consciously constructed” by hand in the U.S., while printed with non-toxic soy and vegetable-based inks. The tubes are made using water-based adhesives so that no solvents are required in production. Any manufactured waste is recycled, and the paperboard is sourced to meet SFI standards. The brand is available in Target’s growing natural beauty section in stores and online. NaturaBrasil NaturaBrazil is an admired beauty brand, is known not only for the quality of its beauty products, but also for its commitment to transparency, sustainability and the promotion of well-being. NaturaBrasil’s packaging is made of 100% post-consumer recycled materials and is recyclable. All products are UEBT certified which assures that natural ingredients are sourced with respect for people and biodiversity. It attests compliance with the UEBT Ethical BioTrade Standard requiring the conservation of biodiversity in the sourcing area and support of provider communities through equitable prices and local projects. The brand’s new Chronos skincare line is focused on the skin’s needs at different life stages. Ren Clean Skincare Ren Clean Skincare, shown above, has pledged to work toward Zero Waste by the year 2021. The brand is a British pioneer of clean skincare. Its Zero Waste initiative challenges the prestige skincare industry to move in a more environmentally conscious direction. This pledge focuses on packaging. The brand will achieve this by following the mantra, Reduce, Reuse Recycle. They will: Remove all unnecessary packaging; Design packaging to be re-usable in another form or re-fillable, whenever possible; Use recycled materials, while making sure that they can be recycled again, to ensure that all packaging is 100% recyclable. The brand is also extending its collaboration with the Surfrider Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of our ocean, waves, and beaches. Together, the organizations will work in partnership to protect clean water and healthy, plastic-free beaches for the future. Bulldog Skincare for Men Bulldog Skincare for Men, a UK brand that creates natural skincare products for male consumers, has announced the replacement of its traditional plastic tubes with packaging derived from sugarcane in order to significantly reduce its environmental impact and carbon dioxide emissions. Bulldog says this is a logical step for a vegan-friendly, “natural” brand that avoids the use of artificial colors and synthetic fragrances. In the year up to January 2016, the brand recorded a 27% sales increase and growing popularity among young men, especially within the 16-24 age group. News about sustainable pack launches should help maintain its performance and may potentially lead to further sales growth. Babo Botanicals Babo Botanicals’ founder/ chief product developer, Kate Solomon, created a summer green translucent, 100% recyclable tube for its After Sun Soothing Hydrating Aloe Gel for Sensitive Skin. The package highlights the pure and clean organic aloe formula. The product sooths, cools, and is quick-absorbing. It has a unique formula that leaves skin hydrated and healthy with no sticky residue. The ultra-sheer, lightweight and 100% natural formula is made with 75% organic aloe vera gel and a blend of plant-based ingredients. Burt’s Bees Burt’s Bees Micellar Cleansing Water & Towelettes: Towelettes are made from repurposed cotton; the outer package film contains 25% postconsumer recycled content (PCR); and the recyclable bottle is made of 80% PCR. Burt’s Bees Micellar Cleansing Water & Towelettes will gently wipe away makeup while deeply cleansing and hydrating the skin. Infused with natural ingredients like Australian White Cypress Oil, responsibly sourced from discarded branches, and Honey Extract, both multitasking cleansers use micellar technology to trap and lift away dirt, oil and other impurities for a fresh and clean complexion – no rinsing or harsh rubbing required. The towelettes are made from repurposed cotton; the outer package film contains 25% postconsumer recycled content (PCR); and the recyclable bottle is made of 80% PCR. Pevonia Pevonia — and its products, including YouthRenew Tinted Cream SPF 30, are made using “highly sustainable processes” in line with the company’s stance on environmental conservation, the brand says. The products are tested only on humans. Pevonia supports reducing the company’s carbon footprint by donating to select organizations and executing company-wide measures such as minimizing paper printing, waste recycling, planting trees, saving energy and more. Pevonia says they have been green “before it was fashionable,” launching in 1991 with cruelty-free formulas and post-consumer recyclable/reusable packaging. Pevonia’s eco-friendly practices include advanced green sourcing and state of the art technologies to produce natural formulas in the most sustainable ways. Eminence Organics Eminence Organics is committed to finding organic, Earth-friendly solutions in every aspect of their business. The company delivers a full range of skin care, using boxes made from post-consumer recycled material that can also be recycled; and containers made of recycled, non-toxic plastic, which is also recyclable. All of the brand’s packing boxes are reused or recycled. Packing chips are made of 100% biodegradable corn that dissolves harmlessly in water. An eco-friendly software system means less printed invoices.
